The G. Benninger OG barrel and vat manufactory produces top-quality wooden barrels for wine growing. Most of the oak and acacia wood used comes from Austria.

Wine ageing in wooden barrels - a complex and valuable step
on the way to a unique wine!

The reason why wooden barrels have never completely gone out of fashion is simple: they can have a positive influence on the wine. Today, barrels are no longer used for transport for practical reasons, but for ageing fine wines. Here, too, the question may arise: Why wood and not stainless steel? Everyone has probably seen pictures of huge steel tanks in which the alcoholic fermentation of wine or beer takes place.

However, many wineries also have wooden barrels.
In contrast to stainless steel tanks, wooden barrels are literally not completely sealed. Minimal amounts of oxygen reach the wine through the wood and react with it. The climate in the wooden barrel also favours malolactic fermentation.

In the end, the wine often appears softer and creamier due to the storage in the barrel.

Crafted according to old traditions

After cutting, our wood is air-dried for three to five years. We deliberately avoid drying kilns in order to fully preserve the intrinsic quality of the valuable raw material wood. You will taste this small but subtle difference later on. The barrels are made in the traditional way. The staves are bent by watering and heating over an open fire and then toasted according to the customer's wishes.

Barrels of all shapes and sizes for wineries

We produce round, oval and small wooden barrels (schnapps barrels) with a capacity of 2 - 15,000 litres in our factory in Grafenwörth.

For 225 - 500 litres we use barrels produced by our partner in France - Tonnellerie ADOUR.
